Harold Koenig is a Principal with VetFed Resources, Inc.
Dr. Koenig is a consultant to the International Health Resource Management Program and the Institute for Defense Education and Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School. He writes a monthly editorial column for U.S. Medicine magazine, the voice of federal medicine. He is also the Chairman and President of The Annapolis Center, a non-profit foundation dedicated to promoting responsible environmental, health, and safety decision-making.
In June 1998, he retired as Surgeon General of the Navy and Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery as a Vice Admiral, after a 32-year career in Navy Medicine. As Surgeon General he exercised the day-to-day executive management and oversight of all Department of the Navy medical policies, programs, and activities. This 4.6 billion dollar a year program maintains medical readiness and provides research, information management, and environmental and preventive medicine support for the U.S Navy and U.S. Marine Corps. With a professional staff of more than 50,000, Navy Medicine delivers care to over 2 million beneficiaries through a worldwide network of 28 hospitals, 150 clinics, 88 dental facilities, and a triple-option health program.
During his military career Dr. Koenig served in a variety of positions including: general medical officer, residency-training program director, department chairman, and Executive Officer of Naval Hospital Portsmouth, VA; and Commanding Officer of Naval Hospital San Diego and of the Naval Health Sciences Education and Training Command, Bethesda, MD. After selection for promotion to Flag rank, in 1988, he served in a variety of positions including: Director, Health Care Operations in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations; Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs); and Deputy Surgeon General of the Navy.
A native of Salinas, California, Dr. Koenig attended the U.S. Naval Academy, Brigham Young University and Baylor University College of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in general pediatrics and pediatric hematology-oncology, is a Diplomate of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and received the 1994 “Federal Health Care Executive Award for Excellence” from the American Hospital Association.
Dr. Koenig’s military awards include: the Navy Distinguished Service Medal; Defense Superior Service Medal; Legion of Merit with Gold Star; Meritorious Service Medal with Gold Star; Navy Commendation Medal; and the Navy Achievement Medal.
Dr. Koenig and his wife Deena have three sons, all in the Navy: Steven, a Lieutenant; Scott, a Lieutenant; and Grant, an Ensign.
